Life-Size Pre and Post Treatment Models

This dental teaching model was designed with the assistance of a periodontist and is hand crafted by a dental technician. It represents morphologically correct bony defects and soft tissue contours.

Gingival inflammation is represented in the flange of both the soft and hard versions showing increased probing depth and colour and contour changes in inflammation.

Once the flange is removed it shows two walled bony defects and a through/through furcation involvement. A bony dehiscence is associated with a gingival cleft in the flange.

The pre treatment mode shows supra-gingival calculus and reveals sub gingival deposits when the flange is removed. Gingival inflammation is demonstrated around 46 43 41 on the model. This model shows a similar pattern of periodontal defects the twice life size model with the addition of a three walled defect mesial to 45.

The post treatment model clearly shows resolution of the soft tissue and the resulting recession with increased interdental spaces. A concept the patient has great difficulty visualizing prior to treatment.

A thorough understanding by the patient of the aetiology and morphology of periodontal disease can often lead to a vastly improved response to therapy; this can then be demonstrated with the post treatment model.

These models can be used to demonstrate the techniques used to place slow release antimicrobial agents and gives a visual basis for describing guided tissue regeneration surgery including bone allografts.

The use of oral hygiene aids can be shown and the importance of maintaining a plaque free area emphasized.
